Curated by CMCA curator emeritus, Bruce Brown
Exhibition venue: Lewis Gallery, Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square, Portland, Maine.
Opening reception: Friday, May 1, 5-8pm
Highways & Byways is the fourth exhibition sponsored by CMCA and curated by CMCA curator emeritus Bruce Brown to be selected by the Portland Public Library for presentation in the Lewis Gallery.
The exhibition is organized in conjunction with The Maine Photo Project, a year-long celebration of photography exhibitions across the state. “Endless networks of highways and byways are very likely the most useful means for all of us, with cameras in hand, to explore and record both immediate, familiar environs, and exotic destinations around the world,” says curator Bruce Brown. “Roadways lead us nearly everywhere we wish to go, with relative ease, to capture our aesthetic responses about what fascinates us most along life’s journey, preserved as visual diaries.”
Highways & Byways features the work of 19 contemporary photographers, including Jeremy Barnard, Thomas Birtwistle, Brendan Bullock, Sam Cady, Paul Caponigro, Susan Davens, Jon Edwards, Carol Fonde, Tonee Harbert, Cig Harvey, Michael Kolster, Rose Marasco, Mark Marchesi, Heath Paley, Liv Kristin Robinson, Jeffrey Stevensen, Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest, Todd Watts, and Katarina Weslien.
