ArtLab | Abstract to Represent
NOTE: CMCA is hosting is monthly ArtLab for All Ages workshops via Facebook Live throughout the period its doors are closed to the public in response to CDC guidelines on COVID-19.
To encourage creativity and connection during this time of social distancing, artists of all ages are invited to join ArtLab educators Mia Bogyo and Alexis Iammarino on the first Saturday of the month from 2-4pm, as always. Instead of meeting in person, we will gather on CMCA’s Facebook page for a live stream, interactive workshop!
April’s workshop takes inspiration from the vibrant and expressive work of the five contemporary painters featured in the exhibition, Skirting the Line: Painting between Abstraction and Representation. Workshop participants will learn techniques for creating 2-D and 3-D forms for landscapes, still lives, and figures.
In advance of the workshop, participants are encouraged to explore the Skirting the Line exhibition through the virtual tour.
Preparations in advance of the workshop:
- Clear an area for artmaking at your kitchen table or on the floor in a space where you and others have room to create; be sure to cover the area with newspaper, an old towel or tablecloth, or other protective covering to prevent any inadvertent damage!
- Materials needed: an assortment of mark-making tools such as paints and brushes, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, chalks or pastels – the more the merrier! You’ll also need scissors and some heavy paper, cardboard and/or small canvas boards to work on. Raid the recycling bin for flattened cereal boxes, brown paper bags, cardboard scraps and interesting wrappers.
- Gather a variety of objects around your house, pantry, and yard to create still lives and sculptural arrangements. Take a look at the work of the artists in “Skirting the Line” for inspiration!
