The Portland-based artist is presenting his monumental sculpture, Simple Twist of Fate (2020) in CMCA’s public courtyard from June 29 through August 31, 2021.
The sculpture is composed of interlocking, hand-twisted concrete blocks that form a free-standing spiral structure. Stephan has also used dye in casting the blocks, resulting in two shades of gray and pink that accentuate the twisting movement of the piece. The sculpture’s spiral form and color palette dynamically capture light and shadow in a multitude of ways throughout the day.
Aaron T Stephan’s works have been featured in solo exhibition at Locust Projects (Miami), the Portland Museum of Art, DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Lincoln, MA), and SPACE (Portland), among other venues. He received a BFA from Purchase College (SUNY) and MFA from Maine College of Art.
Stephan has also completed public commissions across Maine and nationally in Clearwater, Florida; Manchester, New Hampshire; Lubbock, Texas; Salt Lake City and Indianapolis. He is represented by Dowling Walsh Gallery, Rockland.
