I paint figures in sport because bodies are supposed to move. I recreate what the eye observed but the mind couldn't retain. In the greatest sports moments, the athlete is art and I want anyone to see self, relatives or friends in my work. While I draw and paint portraits, I prefer to apply hats and shadows because effective head and body placements convey expression without distraction. While anchored in realism, I design to reflect the rhythm, shape and energy of a particular sport. Although geometry is key, my greatest joy comes from asking what concept best expresses a particular moment and I paint the answers. All my paintings require photos, life drawings, anatomy books, and an understanding of the action.
