Drop-in | ArtLab
Come join artist Veronica Perez in a Braiding Circle to braid artificial hair for use in the artist’s future artworks and to share stories. This free, drop-in activity will guide participants in braiding a three-strand hair braid while discussing lived experiences of identity, hair, and belonging. Braiding Circles are an essential aspect of Perez’s social and artistic practice where they cultivate an atmosphere of vulnerability, open conversation, and togetherness. Previous Braiding Circles have been hosted by Indigo Arts Alliance, Tender Table, and Colby College.
Veronica Perez has exhibited in Maine at Cove Street Arts (Portland, ME), Colby College (Waterville, ME), Portland Museum of Art, SPACE Gallery (Portland, ME), and New Systems Exhibitions (Portland, ME). They were awarded the Ellis-Beauregard Fellowship in the Visual Arts as well as a year-long fellowship at the Lunder Institute for American Art at the Colby College Museum of Art. Perez received an MFA from Maine College of Art and a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design (Philadelphia, PA).
Veronica Perez created the works on view in their summer 2022 CMCA exhibition, voices, whispering, during a year-long residential fellowship at the Colby College Museum of Art’s Lunder Institute for American Art. The exhibition was made possible through grants from the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts with additional support from individual donors and members.
