“…[CMCA] small-but-mighty Maine museum, where you’ll find some of the most free-thinking and innovative contemporary exhibitions in New England..”
– Boston Globe, 2021

“It is rare that a museum experience is so thoroughly and consistently satiating from one end to the other.”
– Portland Press Herald, 2022

Dear Friends of CMCA,

“CMCA is on fire!” someone recently told us. It feels good to get such a compliment, and it suggests that we’re doing something right: engaging you, meeting your needs, and connecting you with contemporary art and a community of others who share your passion. One of our donors is so excited about what’s going on at CMCA that they have just offered a challenge to match any gift of any size up to a total of $100,000 – but only if we can raise that much from other donors.

2026 is a big year for CMCA, marking the 10th anniversary of the new building in Rockland designed by Toshiko Mori. A decade after it opened, it still looks elegant, cutting-edge, and contemporary – a place for New Art Now. But it’s not just about having a beautiful structure. More important is what the building offers you, the arts of Maine, and the community.

• This summer the CMCA galleries provided the setting for Nicole Wittenberg’s majestic 11-foot paintings, diaphanous cast latex installations by Carlie Trosclair, and meticulously crafted sculptures by Elizabeth Atterbury. Many of these works were created specifically for our galleries. The building makes new art possible.

• The building provides a place where we gather to experience art together in shared space. At CMCA you encounter others who love contemporary art. The building lets you make new connections and forge friendships that can last a lifetime, and together we create community.

• In the ArtLab, children and families engage in hands-on making and experimenting. Students come to the museum for tours and then discover how it feels to create art themselves. The building makes it possible for children, youth, and adults to engage with art and explore their own creativity.

• By moving CMCA to Rockland we joined a larger arts ecosystem that includes the Farnsworth Art Museum, Strand Theatre, Camden International Film Festival, and a thriving group of commercial art galleries. The building makes us part of something bigger: the vibrant arts community of Rockland.

We have incredible momentum heading into this new season. Our recently launched online program Virtual Look Inside will allow us to take our school tours and curriculum into more than 300 schools across the state. And with our new Curator Grant Wahlquist in the lead, we are planning an ambitious and adventurous future exhibition program.

We can’t do any of this without your help. Please consider supporting CMCA with a gift to the 2026 Annual Fund. Your gift of any size will be doubled, and will make twice the difference!

We are so grateful that you are part of the CMCA community. I hope to see you at the museum soon.
