The fourth installation in CMCA’s Counterpoint series, What Was, Is, pairs recent sculpture by Duncan Hewitt with paintings and selected photographs by Claire Seidl. CMCA’s Counterpoint series is intended to spark an engaging aesthetic dialogue between two artists’ work. In this instance, Hewitt’s sculpture and Seidl’s paintings and photographs create a compelling conversation about materiality, time, and memory. Hewitt is a sculptor who remakes and replaces things that are important to him. They reappear as touchstones that exist in real…

It is the second in a series of works exploring a metaphorical relationship between algorithmically generated sound and the aural patterns of our sonic environment. Much like the natural soundscapes that inspired it, Shifting Walls is structured by emergent and indeterminate processes that continually change over time while drawing from a palette of simple synthesized sounds. Ryan Page is a…

Mary Armstrong has been painting the landscape near her home and studio in Robinhood Cove in Georgetown, south of Bath, Maine, for many years. “In every moment,” she says, “I am in awe of the dance between earth, water, and sky.” In this group of recent paintings, she creates the illusion of a vast and endless space that is full of incidence and light. For Armstrong, the act of painting is a search, and her images -- built up of…

Over the past decade, artist Jon Imber’s paintings of the environs surrounding his longtime summer home in Stonington, Maine, became increasingly abstract. Pulsing with energy and composed of an array of deft, calligraphic brushstrokes, they evoke the sensory experience of a specific time and place. Imber relished the imperative of painting on site, where the changing light and atmosphere demand a rapid execution. “It’s a good match to my temperament,” he has said. “I like the challenge of looking at…

Amidst the natural forces of his home in Georgetown, Maine, Ron Leax is both artist and naturalist. The sculptor puts his early biology training to use, or playful misuse, in his new body of flat works entitled The Natural History of Georgetown. The series of mixed-media drawings is a collision of “incident and experience and sensation,” a document of natural processes and artful human interference. Viewed up close, the surfaces of Leax’s subtle compositions reveal traces of elemental forces that…

In Played to Win, artist Elizabeth Fox’s most recent series of paintings, everything is not as it first appears. Ripe with tension and innuendo, exactly what is happening in these small-scale narratives is never made explicitly clear. “The marvelously evil Frank Underwood from House of Cards named my show,” says Fox. “We all have our goals, but sometimes we are up and sometimes we are down, the point is, we’re in the game.” With their muted color palette and deceptively straightforward style, Fox’s…

In her paintings, Betsy Eby fuses the line between the musical and the visual composition. A classically trained pianist, she seeks in her work what Rothko described as “the place where music lives.” The layers and gestures of her paintings evoke musical spaces and rhythms while drawing on patterns found in nature. From her early childhood, musical and natural rhythms blended in Eby’s sensibility. She spent her first years of life in a small town on the Oregon coast, practicing…
