Beginning Book Forms with Sue Michlovitz

Open your creative minds and your tool box to the exciting contemporary concepts of  book arts. We will spend two 3-hour sessions in the ArtLab delving into the world of book arts. Put on your inner artist for an introduction to book and binding  formats, content/selection, construction, and sequencing. 

The six hour hands-on workshop will provide you with basic information on. 

  • Topography 
  • Bookbinding 
  • Paper selection, cutting, folding 
  • Forms of books ex include accordion, single folios, others 
  • Tools used in book construction 

Participants will learn that pages within your book can be drawn upon, painted, collaged, deckled, ribboned and  included. Attendees are encouraged to bring small drawings, photos or other mixed media you wish to include in a book. The instructor will provide a list of resources to continue your practice in the above forms. 

Note: We will be working with paper cutters and sharp instruments used only after  demonstrations and then under close supervision of the instructor and assistant.

About the artist
Sue Michlovitz is a visual artist working in photography, artist books, and mixed  media. Her images often reveal scenes that may go unnoticed. She has shown her  photographs at the State of the Art Gallery (Ithaca, NY), Camden Public Library  (Camden, ME), Art in the Barn of Cushing Historical Society (Cushing, ME), Griffin  Museum of Photography Lafayette City Center (Boston, Mass) and Cove Street Art’s  Portland Debuts (Fall 2022). Summer 2022, four images were selected for outdoor  installations as part of Photoville Pop-up, co-sponsored by the Griffin Museum and the  Winchester Cultural District (Winchester, Mass). In 2023, two images were selected for  Photoville x Winchester.  

She had a solo exhibit July 29-August 25, 2023 at the Maine Jewish Museum, Portland  ME. Arts Muse, a hand-made accordion book, was featured in the Griffin Museum’s  The Photography Artist Book Initiative virtual gallery, Fall 2021. Two books including We  Were Told to Be Quiet were shown at the Michael Good Gallery (Rockport, ME) and at  Maine Museum of Photographic Arts Twelfth Night Exhibition both in 2022.  

Sue serves on the Board of Trustees at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art  (CMCA), Rockland, ME, where she is on the Education Committee. She is a member of  the MidCoast Maine Book Arts collective. Michlovitz earned her MFA in Media Arts at Maine Media College, Rockport, ME and has a PhD in Physical Therapy from  Hahnemann University (now Drexel University), Philadelphia, PA. She lives in Camden,  ME with her husband and their two every-so-happy beagles.
