As artists grapple with the climate crisis and how it informs their practices, engaging with data can be a daunting experience. Local and international projects are producing an enormous amount of data about our marine ecosystems. However, accessing and utilizing these data can be challenging even for scientists. Partnering with Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership, this workshop aims to make data accessible to non-technical communities, and to explore modes for understanding, interpreting, and using data as part of your artistic practice. Over the course of the workshop we’ll look at how to access data sets and the myriad approaches to using data in artwork. We’ll discuss why data-driven art is a critical piece of climate action and have time to share questions about data in artists’ existing projects and/or provide guidance to artists seeking to use data in new projects.
