Art is a bodily function. For me, it is more physically intuitive than intellectual. Like a dancer, my body often understands the music before my mind does. Most of the effort is spent trying to stay out of my own way and in letting whatever wants to happen, happen. I see myself as a conduit rather than a creator because successful pieces are surprises that seem to make themselves through me. Only later, with distance, are patterns, symbols or meanings sometimes recognized. Ideas come later, feelings come first. My job, and the one element over which I have control is to put myself in a position that is receptive to these surprises by spending time in the studio every day.
