NANCY SIMONDS 2021/ BIO
In her BLOCK STACK and OVOID series different arrangements rectangles or oval shapes, protean luxuriant colors, and sublime soft texture create a feeling of transcendent order. These images are anti-chaos. All strive for a connection to a moment of reflection, resolution and calm. Simonds strives through marvelous, dynamic and resolved color relationships to make a visual place for personal contemplation and serenity. Her work is informed by undergraduate studies in Classics and classical architecture during my years at Smith College and the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, Italy.
Simonds is also a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She maintains an active studio practice in the South End of Boston. Her work has been shown at the Butler Museum of American Art, the Danforth Museum and the University of Maine Museum of Art. She completed a public art project for the City of Cambridge, MA in 2011 called BEACON OF COLOR. It is installed at the corner of First and Spring Streets, Cambridge MA. Her work is part of over 50 corporate collections including Harvard Law School, Merrill Lynch and Fidelity Investments.
Simonds has had 10 solo shows at Graficas Gallery, Nantucket, MA. Also, Simonds has had other shows in other parts of the country: 15th Street Studio, Boulder CO, Barba Contemporary Art, Palm Springs, CA, & the Portland Art Gallery, Portland, ME.
