As a carpenter’s assistant (in my teen years), I came to learn that I loved working with wood and creating things. As I became older, the desire to work with my hands continued, evolved ~ building, renovating, finishing ~ led me to explore the art of furniture making… I had only worked with traditional woods up until the point I decided to merge my lifelong appreciation for the sea, with my lifelong skills of being a craftsman. I had always been drawn to the irregular forms, stunning finishes and organic shapes that only windswept, sun-bleached, weather beaten woods can have…My love for sailing, surfing and traveling allowed me opportunities to truly appreciate this incredible medium and thus become inspired to utilize it. For the past 16 years I have been designing and creating art and furniture from Maine found driftwood. Some pieces are utilized as they are, others are shaped or cut to create a particular pattern or reflect movement …over time I have also included Maine collected mussel shells, lobster warp, steel, linen and most recently, cedar. The natural world is what inspires me. Utilizing found and salvaged woods makes sense to me. Designing pieces with purpose and longevity matter to me.
