Born in 1943 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Sam Cady has been sailing and exploring the coast of Maine his entire life and the imprint of the state’s rugged topography, numerous offshore islands, and waterfront industries is threaded through his art. Published on the occasion of the solo exhibition Sam Cady | Parts of the Whole at CMCA in Spring 2017.

Known internationally for his iconic representational paintings, Alex Katz (b. 1927) has been a summer resident of Lincolnville, Maine, for more than six decades and is a longtime supporter of CMCA. He has called the new CMCA building, which opened to the public in June 2016, “a game-changer for Maine art.” The exhibition Alex Katz | Small Paintings was part of CMCA’s inaugural opening in Summer 2016.

Mark Wethli, Untitled, 1993
Mark Wethli (b. 1949) is a painter and public artist who lives and works in Brunswick, Maine, where he is also the A. LeRoy Greason Professor of Art at Bowdoin College. Continually asking the viewer to contemplate their own awareness of knowing and seeing, Wethli has explored many forms in his artwork including painting, sculpture and installation, both representational and abstract. The exhibition Mark Wethli | Piper Cub was held at CMCA in Spring 2017.

JT Gibson, Leading Edge, 2009
JT Gibson is a graduate of the Pratt Institute, where he studied sculpture and photography. He is founding director of Metaphor Bronze in Morrill, Maine, creating high-quality custom bronze works for designers and artists, including Maya Lin and Peter Marino Architects, along with his own artwork which draws from elemental forms in nature. In 2011, his large scale installation, Operation Milkweed, was exhibited on the façade of CMCA’s building in Rockport, ME.

Anne Neely, Maine Meditation #24, 2014

Anne Neely’s paintings from her studio in Jonesport, ME, address the elemental shifts and changes found in the coastal environment. Drawing upon memory, dreams, and direct observation, she creates an invented pictorial world where sky, earth, and water become one. Where “above” and “below”, “near” and “far” merge and flow in a symbiotic dance of color, line, and mark making. Neely was featured as part of CMCA’s Counterpoint exhibition series in 2012.
