Bernard Langlais: Spirit in Wood

February 15, 2014 | 10:00 am - February 23, 2014 | 2:00 pm EST

Drop by CMCA for a special February School Vacation Week exhibition featuring the imaginative animal kingdom of artist Bernard Langlais (1921-1977). The works in the exhibition are recent gifts to CMCA from Colby College and Kohler Foundation, Inc. Accompanying weekday ArtLab workshops will feature a variety of projects inspired by Langlais’s works:

ArtLab for All Ages Workshops: Monday Feb 17 – Friday Feb 21, 10am to 1pm. Admission is free.

Langlais, a native of Old Town, Maine, studied at the Corcoran School of Art, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Brooklyn Museum School. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he lived in Paris and New York, where he began working with wood, creating abstract reliefs. In 1966, he returned permanently to Maine, settling on a riverfront property in Cushing. There he began creating the figurative sculptures for which he is widely known.

A long-time member of Maine Coast Artists, Langlais’s 18-foot wooden seagull hung on the facade of the Russell Avenue building for many years before the organizational name was changed to Center for Maine Contemporary Art in 2000.

A retrospective of Bernard Langlais’s work will be on view at the Colby College Museum of Art, July 19, 2014 – January 4, 2015, drawn from their extensive Langlais holdings.

CMCA is grateful for the generous support of its main media sponsor, Maine Home + Design magazine.
