I am a fine art photographer specializing in landscape, nature and night photography. While my early photographic inspiration was the wide-open vistas of the American West, I now find my inspiration in Maine’s stunning mountain and coastal landscapes as well as in the night sky. I live in midcoast Maine with my amazing wife and daughter.
Jim Nickelson came to photography after careers as an aerospace engineer (he worked as a shuttle flight controller for NASA) and a lawyer. Blending craft and instinct to spectacular effect, he is both a master printer and a photographer. He graduated from the University of Texas, earned a law degree at Harvard, and studied photography at the Maine Media Workshops. He has won awards from B&W and Color Magazines, has shown at the Bates College Museum and the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California, Ten High Street Gallery and Schooner Gallery in Millbridge, the Knox Mansion in Thomaston, the Jonathan Frost Gallery in Rockland, Veiwpoint Gallery in Nova Scotia, and at the Minneapolis Photo Center. In September he will be artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park, and this year he has shows at Maine Audubon Gilsland Farm Gallery in Falmouth, Wallwork Gallery in Rockport, Kingman Gallery on Deer Isle, Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the University of Wyoming Art Museum in Laramie, Maine Media Gellery in Rockport, the Colorado Photographic Arts Center in Denver, and the Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, Missouri.
