“Years, miles, reflections self-concealed of stark and distant homeland.”
-Francis R. Reardon

Escaping to Maine from Queens, NY in the early 1970’s on a 9 hour Greyhound bus trip was the beginning of a lifelong love affair. Waking up in mist shrouded Camden at age 16 I was enchanted by what was then a quiet harbor village where I would attend the Sea School on Cross St. and have many adventures along the coast. Maine is in my blood and my soul and although I have not lived there for many years I dream of my various homes during my dozen years as a Mainer. After graduating from the University of Maine – Portland/Gorham I spent another dozen years in Switzerland. During that time I had forgotten to renew my American driver’s license. On a trip back to the states I went to the DMV in Augusta and the kind woman there asked me when I would be coming home. I am still trying to answer that question, and in my painting I am able to travel back to Maine whenever I need to. My education is primarily in music. However I find that my training in dance, theater arts, choreography, music composition and performance all contribute to my work as a painter and musician. I find the parallels in rhythm, texture, line, light, atmosphere, and motion to be at the very core of music and art.

Painting for me is about the process, discovering the painting that exists in my imagination and that which I find in the final product. Water is my muse. My passion for the sea informs the images I make using acrylics and watercolor paints. My work is evocative of the motion of waves and wind, the view of the water up close from a sailing vessel or the shoreline. Trees are also a subject for me. Very different from the sea, they are static and yet always moving, slowly growing and changing. I try to find a balance between the dissonance and harmony on the canvas using scraping and printing techniques as well as traditional brushwork.
