My approach is archaeological, though I try to create and uncover strata of time and memory simultaneously. I draw from my research in archaeology, art history, ancient mythologies and symbolism, with focused series themes to-date of Totems, Icons, Elegies and Cartomancy. I explore physical and perceptual three-dimensional space in my work through a variety of methods: layering transparent materials, assemblage, painted space and ultimately, all three together. Symbolism of color, image and form are strong characteristics of my work.

I use combinatorial methods (collage and assemblage) to make both wall-mounted and freestanding works on supports of canvas, board and paper. Each may include my own painting, drawing, photography and cut paper silhouettes as well as objects, textiles, “artifact paper” and ephemera collected over the years. I keep in the back of my mind a quote from psychologist Jerome Bruner – “All of the forms of effective surprise grow out of a combinatorial activity — a placing of things in new perspectives.

I was raised in the greater Cincinnati area and have lived in New England for most of the past 23 years, and my professional career includes work as a museum administrator and archaeologist. I have become actively re-engaged with my art-making since 1999 and have had exhibitions in New Bedford, MA and work included in exhibitions there, Cape Cod as well as in Venice and Rome, Italy. I reside and have my studio in Portland, Maine.
